The cold, wind and even snow will reach Portugal from the afternoon of Friday, 26th October, "due to the transport of a mass of polar air, very cold and relatively dry, coming from Iceland", he announced today the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The forecast thus points to a «significant change in the weather, with the passage from a situation of mild temperatures, to another, in which cold and wind will be the most significant».

Thus, a gradual temperature drop is expected from the afternoon of the 26th, as well as an intensification of the wind, especially on the west coast and in the highlands (strong north wind up to 50 km/h and with gusts up to 70 km/h) .

On Saturday and Sunday, the 27th and 28th, the maximum temperatures should not exceed 15°C, with the exception of the southern coast of the Algarve and some places in Alentejo, where they can be slightly higher (2 to 3°C). In the interior North and Center regions, the maximum temperature values should vary between 5 and 10°C.

Regarding the minimum temperature values, they should be below 10°C, and on the order of 0 to 5°C in the interior regions, where the first frosts of the season are expected.

Low temperatures, associated with the most intense wind, should cause “thermal discomfort”, which means that the sensation of cold will be greater than the measured temperature.

On the other hand, one of the possible scenarios points to the occurrence of scattered precipitation in the North and Center regions on the 27th, which, if it occurs, should originate some snow in the highlands.

Therefore, it is best to take advantage of the mild weather until the 25th of October, which will continue under the combined influence of an intense anticyclone, located west of the British Isles, although with a tendency to gradually weaken, and a cut-off in the upper levels of the troposphere, centered to the northwest of the Madeira archipelago, to which the transport of generically tropical air masses from the interior of the Iberian Peninsula is associated.

In practice, explains the IPMA, this atmospheric configuration translates, on the one hand, into the maintenance, until the 25th, of maximum temperatures with values higher than the average values for the time of year (generally between 20 and 25°C), and on the other hand, the possibility of occurrence of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the Center and South regions, which may be locally intense.
