Altice extends fiber optic network to 80% of the territory of Faro

Network will go beyond the borders of urban areas and reach more remote locations in the county

Altice Portugal will increase the fiber optic network of Faro and expects to have 80% of the municipality covered by "the third quarter of 2019", announced this Wednesday Alexandre Fonseca, executive president of the telecommunications company.

The cooperation protocol between the Chamber and Altice that will allow this second wave of investment in the fiber optic network of Faro was signed today in the Algarve capital. This was the first of several agreements that Alexandre Fonseca will enter into, today and tomorrow, during the visit of the company's executive committee to the Algarve region.

Today in Faro, was also announced Altice Portugal's support for the Algarve Tech Hub, a technological hub that will be born in the Algarve capital.

The expansion of the fiber optic network will allow "to leave urban areas and cover so-called interior areas, fighting desertification", considered the mayor of Faro Rogério Bacalhau, during the protocol signing session.

This is because fiber optics allow better and more stable access to the internet, which, in the view of the town councilor, «is already a basic need».

“We have a coverage of 96% of the water supply network and 90% of the sanitation network. These 80% rival these numbers,” he added.

“It was, without a doubt, an important day for our municipality. The agreements established with Altice will have a direct impact on the affirmation of our municipality at various levels», concluded Rogério Bacalhau.

Alexandre Fonseca, on the other hand, pointed out that the expansion of the network «will be decisive for the creation of value and private investment, helping to attract more companies and investment for the region, with the creation of more jobs».

“At the same time, we also intend to ensure greater efficiency for companies already based in this municipality. We are talking about more than a fiber optic coverage of more than 80% of the territory. This is also our proximity contribution to the development of the country's economy and this is one of the key vectors of our strategy for Portugal», said the president of Altice Portugal.

The intervention in Faro is one of the many that is foreseen in the strategy of «expanding and strengthening the resilience of new generation fixed and mobile infrastructures» by Altice, which plans to spend 5,3 million euros across the country, by 2020, to ensure that Portugal is “the first country in Europe with 100% fiber optic coverage”.
