A tuk-tuk ride celebrates Álvaro de Campos's birthday in Tavira

Álvaro de Campos' birthday party, which Pessoa gave birth to in Tavira on October 15, 1890, has already started and lasts until November

Scattered around Tavira, there are dozens of plaques with poems by Álvaro de Campos, the heteronym that Fernando Pessoa gave birth in this Algarve city: from the Ode Maritime up to Opiary, passing by tobacco shop. Now, on the occasion of Álvaro de Campos' Birthday Party, a cultural event of the association Partilha Alternativa, it will be possible to see 11 of these plaques on a ride from a Tuk tuk

This Literary Route Álvaro de Campos is now available and at the distance of a reservation that can be made by calling 916994889. Passing through places like the CP Station or Caixa Agrícola, the visitor is invited to get off the Tuk tuk to read each of the poems.

Along the way, the guide tells the story of Fernando Pessoa and the Portuguese poet's connection to Tavira, the city where his paternal grandfather was born and that he chose to do there. born its heteronym Álvaro de Campos. At the end, visitors choose a city landscape to take a photo with the sign “Aqui Nasceu Álvaro de Campos” was born.

This is one of the activities of Álvaro de Campos' Birthday Party, an initiative that has already started and runs until the end of November, in Tavira.

In an interview with Sul Informação, Tela Leão, president of the association Partilha Alternativa, said that this is "an increasingly dear event, with a greater number of people joining".

Therefore, a program was prepared that includes exhibitions, cinema, music or contemporary dance. Everything directly or indirectly related to Fernando Pessoa.

«Let's have, for example, a contemporary dance show with Yuko Kominami, a Japanese dancer who lives in Tavira. She chose a poem and will try to say it without words», he explained to our newspaper. It will be on the 27th of October, at 16 pm, in a place yet to be defined.

In terms of music, for example, there will be a show by Grupo Pérolas do Girão, with traditional Portuguese music, which will sing popular quatrains written by Pessoa. This event takes place on November 10, at 18 pm, at the Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library.

«It is important that people also understand this most popular aspect of Pessoa, despite having been a great scholar. We also tried to touch on that in this programming», framed Tela Leão.

Also during the concerts, on October 28, at 18 pm, the Tavira composer Luís Conceição joins the Irish Jane Hennessey for a show based on the poem series “The Mad Fiddler”, written by Fernando Pessoa ortónimo.

Moving on to the cinematographic aspect, the program foresees a double session. First, a short film by Paul Ouazan will be screened, “who invited Maria de Medeiros to say the poem “All love letters are ridiculous” in three languages. The way the actress moves from one language to another, during the short film, is interesting and very dynamic», explained Tela Leão.

Afterwards, there will be a screening of a documentary in honor of Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos, one of the greatest Portuguese engravers and who had a close connection with Tavira. Bartolomeu died 10 years ago and Álvaro de Campos' Birthday Party wants to remember him this Sunday, October 14, at 20:30 pm, in the Cloisters of Convento do Carmo.

«His story is very curious: he was a great engraver, he taught in London all his life, but before that, at the age of 18, he came to Tavira to join the army. One day, while he was here, he found, in a bookshop, Álvaro de Campos' Ode Maritime. He read it and became completely in love, in such a way that during his life he often drew the heteronym and Fernando Pessoa», told Tela Leão to our newspaper.

«At the end of his life, Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos decided that he wanted to work in Tavira and, with the help of Gulbenkian, he set up his engraving studio with all the equipment he had in London in a space provided to him by Casa das Arts of Tavira. Later, when he died, he asked that the ashes be thrown into the Gilão River», he added.

But as this festival wants to cover several areas, there will also be exhibitions and lectures. One of them is “Pessoas”, by Ricardo Ranz, a Spanish artist in love with the Portuguese poet. The exhibition will be open until November 30, at Casa Álvaro de Campos, in Tavira.

Another is about “Modernismo em Tavira”, by Isabel Macieira, and will be inaugurated this Saturday, October 13th, at the headquarters of A|NAFA – Algarve Photographers Association. The photography exhibition shows the most outstanding examples of modernist architecture in the city and surroundings.

In the part of the lectures, the person from Teresa Rita Lopes visits, on the 20th of October, the Algarve city to talk about the different phases and facets of the poet Fernando Pessoa. The session is scheduled for 11:00 am at Casa Álvaro de Campos.

Despite being «everything to be done at the expense and risk» of the association Partilha Alternativa, which this year did not obtain funding from official entities to set up this program, Tela Leão notes that Tavira «is increasingly closer to Álvaro de Campos».

"There is interest and greater dynamics," he said. One of the initiatives that has aroused the greatest interest on the part of tourists are the chalk poems, written on slates, at the entrances of restaurants, placed there as part of Álvaro de Campos' Birthday Party.

Basically, considered Tela Leão, «the city is closer to the poet».
