UGT/Algarve visited burnt areas in Monchique and found a «desolate scene»

Daniel Santana, leader of UGT/Algarve, says it is urgent to "minimize impacts" of the fire

The union leaders of the General Workers Union (UGT) visited, this Wednesday, September 12th, areas burned by the fire in Monchique and found a "desolate scene".

This visit served for UGT to show solidarity "with the workers and people affected by that scourge", as well as to "praise the tireless work and courage of the firefighters in the fight against fire".

"Accompanied on the ground by the Fire Commander and the Civil Protection Officer, it was possible to observe the bleak scenario" and "hear the reports of operations carried out on the ground to try to stop the fire that raged for eight days, over 27 thousand hectares of forest , leaving an indescribable trail of destruction».

At the secretariat meeting that UGT-Algarve held in Monchique Chamber, a review of the situation was made. UGT highlights “the help of the local authority, humanitarian associations and businessmen in the beginning of the reconstruction and/or recovery work of about 50 houses affected by the fires”.

Daniel Santana, leader of UGT-Algarve, considered that the fires “have aggravated the danger of economic, social and territorial cohesion in this area of the Algarve interior, especially in the most vulnerable populations”.

According to the official, "it is urgent, immediately, to minimize the impacts that the fires had, where the closure of some companies and the inexistence of means of subsistence can generate situations of prolonged unemployment and poverty that are difficult to resolve, if the support measures and investment incentives do not come quickly'.
