School of Health moves "in full" to Gambelas this school year

Moving to Gambelas causes the launch of a new postgraduate course in Community Nursing

The School of Health (ESS) of the University of Algarve (UAlg) will start operating, in full, this school year 2018/2019, at the Campus de Gambelas, like the Sul Informação had advanced firsthand.

Thus, the beginning of classes, on September 17th, will already take place in the new facilities.

This organic unit, which was located at the entrance to the city of Faro, near the Teatro das Figuras, is now based in buildings 1 (where the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences is located) and 7 (which houses the Faculty of Science and Technology) of the Gambelas Campus, where its courses will start to be taught in full.

In an interview with Sul Informação and to Rádio Universitária do Algarve, given in July, Paulo Águas, dean of UAlg, had explained that there was no longer «capacity to have the entire ESS on the Health Campus», hence the need to move to Gambelas.

This change takes place within the scope of a profound "reallocation of spaces" that is underway at UAlg and that counts on "the collaboration of all the Organic Units" and the "understanding" of the ESS.

«The maintenance of the current situation would always lead to the deterioration of the situation of the Superior School of Health», had assured the dean, in his interview.

And what will happen in the current premises of the Escola Superior de Saúde? «The intention is to transfer the Visual Arts course to the [current] Health Campus», announced, at the time, Paulo Águas.

It is certain that this decision provoked opposition from the students. THE The UAlg Academic Association was “uncomfortable” with the move of the Health School to Gambelas.

The School of Health was created in 2003, having in its genesis the Nursing School of Faro, integrated into UAlg in 2001.

"Due to the rapid growth in the number of students, as of 2004/05, some of ESSUAlg's teaching activities, especially the laboratory aspects, also took place at the Gambelas Campus, as these conditions did not exist in the old building" , explains now UAlg, in a statement.

For the dean, «the concentration of teaching activities in a single Campus will allow greater functionality of the School and a closer relationship with the rest of the academic community».

Currently, the School of Health teaches undergraduate courses in Laboratory Biomedical Sciences, Dietetics and Nutrition, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy and Orthoprosthetics.

Together with other Organic Units of UAlg, he teaches the Masters in Social Gerontology and Health and Safety at Work. It also ensures, together with the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, the Masters in Management and Assessment of Health Technologies and is part of the international consortium responsible for the Eramus Mundus Masters in Emergency Nursing and Critical Care.

Coinciding with the move to the Gambelas Campus, in the 2018/19 school year a new postgraduate course in Community Nursing will be launched.
