The PS in Vila Real de Santo António demands "clarifications and answers" from the majority PSD in the Chamber on the contract it has with the company Ecoambiente for the collection of garbage in the municipality.
The Socialists abstained from voting on a proposal by the CDU, presented at the May 31st Chamber Meeting, which called for the start of the contract termination process with Ecoambiente, due to «the state of degradation in which cleaning is found. of streets and containers, as has been widely witnessed by citizens».
Even so, in the same session, the PS asked to have access to "a set of information essential to a conscious decision-making", a claim denied by the social-democratic majority.
In the socialist proposal that was rejected - similarly to what happened with the CDU - the Chamber was asked to reveal, among others, if "Ecoambiente is complying with the commitments assumed with the Municipality", what are the costs that the service entails, what equipment and personnel the company has assigned to this service and whether there is “legal opinion on the existence of just cause for termination of the contract and information on the costs associated with a unilateral termination”.
Following the lead of its proposal, the PS/VRSA questions the PSD's motivations for not approving it, questioning whether "the citizens will not have the right to know the truth".
“What interests is the PSD protecting? What does the PSD intend to hide when it does not accept that nothing that has happened and is happening in the municipality can be object of analysis and debate?”, reinforce the socialists.
Despite its abstention from voting on the CDU proposal, the PS also questions the quality of the service being provided by Ecoambiente, speaking of “numerous evidences of disorganization and poor cleaning, or better yet, lack of cleaning”.
He even accuses the municipal executive and the PSD of being "more concerned with their image and with covering up responsibilities of their management, or of companies linked to the municipality, than with the health of their fellow citizens".
All of this, they say, is "a sign of little demand, carelessness or, worse, incompetence."
From the Chamber of VRSA, following a contact from the Sul Informação, comes the guarantee that, «whenever necessary, the municipality will assess the service in question, striving for a clean and environmentally sustainable municipality».
Without ever referring to the demands made by the PS, the Chamber adds that the collection of waste, in this summer period, is "being done twice a day".
"Because it is a time of greater affluence to the municipality, in which the population increases four times, there may be some specific constraints, issues that are being duly evaluated and have already been communicated to the company to be corrected," added the municipality.
