Portimão invests 1,4 million euros in the rehabilitation of the Old Fish auction

The vice president of the Chamber explains that the first phase involves consolidating walls and building a new roof

The Old Lota de Portimão building, next to the old Arade bridge, will be rehabilitated, in a two-phase project submitted by the Portimonense City Council to CRESC Algarve 2020 and which will cost a total of 1,4 million euros.

In the first phase, whose tender, according to Joaquim Castelão Rodrigues, vice-president of the municipality, "will be launched later this year, probably in October", the operation, integrated in the Action Plan for Urban Regeneration (PARU) of Portimão, includes restoration of the building, which is “in an advanced state of degradation, in need of urgent requalification”.

"The building is very degraded, especially the roof, so we can't even promote activities there anymore, because there are risks," said the mayor. Castelão Rodrigues predicts that the first phase of the works will be ready «until next summer, so that this building will have new conditions to receive events».

The works involve the rehabilitation of the multipurpose room (with an area of 191,30 square meters), also promoting the consolidation of the main body, both in terms of the roof and of the structure.

The intervention also includes the preparation of the execution project for the rehabilitation of the Old Lota building.

This first phase, budgeted at around 350 thousand euros (349.794,73 euros), will be supported by European funds.

However, to what the Sul Informação found with the Municipality of Portimão, only an amount of nearly 123 thousand euros was considered approved eligible investment, since the totality of the intervention «exceeded the eligible and approved allocation for this operation in PARU Portimão». Therefore, the ERDF contribution approved was close to 80 thousand euros (65% contribution).

2nd phase of the rehabilitation of the old auction of Portimão

In the second phase, which has not yet been approved, but has already been applied for under the Cultural Heritage notice, the remaining interventions will be promoted that aim to transform the Old Lot into a public utility building, to host cultural projects, festivities, commemorations and events related to the local and regional traditions, related to gastronomy, handicrafts and other popular events.

It may also house, on the west side, facilities for tourism services, as well as public sanitary facilities, in support of the riverside area, «in order to promote the requalification of the tourist offer».

This second phase, which includes sewage, water and electricity works, foresees an investment of just over 1 million euros (1.071.871,10€).

The building was built in 1916 to house the first power station in the city of Portimão. From the 50's of the last century, it started to function as a fish market, remaining in this use until the end of the 80's.

From that time on and for about two decades, it hosted the grilled sardine restaurants. This building was identified, in the Municipal Master Plan of Portimão, as a building of interest to the municipality to propose classification.

This is one of the three projects promoted by the Municipality of Portimão, within the scope of urban rehabilitation, stressed Joaquim Castelão Rodrigues. The third and final phase of Jardim 1º de Dezembro, which involves the refurbishment of the tiles, is about to begin, while the launch of the competition for the refurbishment of the surrounding of the Igreja Matriz, in an amount of 700, is expected for the fourth quarter of this year. thousand euros.
