Spanish fishing boat sank in front of Vila Real de Santo António beach

The two crew members of the vessel were saved and did not need medical assistance

A Spanish fishing vessel, with two crew on board, sank this Thursday, at 12:30 pm, about a hundred meters from Santo António beach, in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António. The boat was operating with hook art when it sank.

The two men on the boat were quickly helped by other fishing boats that were nearby, by a Maritime Police boat and by a boat from the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos, and were rescued by the latter.

According to the National Maritime Authority, both of the rescued crew were "in good health" and did not need medical assistance. After carrying out the rescue of the Spanish fishermen, «the vessel was towed ashore with the aim of putting it back in the correct position».

Thus, “from the accident there is only material damage to be registered”.

AMN added that "the Spanish vessel was authorized to operate in Portugal, under the border agreement between Portugal and Spain" and that the vessel will now be subject to an inspection to investigate the causes of the accident.
