António Costa: The «priority, now, is to rebuild» what the Monchique fire destroyed

The Prime Minister considered that no human losses were "absolutely extraordinary"

The prime minister arrived in Monchique moments ago to meet with the mayors of Monchique, Silves and Portimão, the territories affected by the fire that raged for a week and was dominated today.

António Costa will make “a review of the situation and see what response has to be given”, guaranteeing that “the priority, now, is to rebuild”.

Before entering the meeting, the prime minister spoke with journalists and defended the actions of the Civil Protection and security forces, particularly with regard to the evacuation of localities.

“The priority of priorities is the safeguarding of human life. To have guaranteed that there was no loss of life is absolutely extraordinary», he considered.

As for what may have gone wrong, António Costa said that everything will be investigated and that it is "normal" to have inquiries and assessments of "occurrences of this magnitude".
