Students from Portimão say no to straws and “fashion” is picking up

EMARP will continue the project with new initiatives

Students in the 3rd class of the Pedra Mourinha Basic School, from the Júdice Fialho Group, in Portimão, showed, in the school year that ended in June, that they were against the use of straws, having created a “Calhimeter”, where they deposited them, and even families joined the fashion

The project, called STAP (Somos Todos Anti Palhinhas) arose as a result of the «awareness that is done, with students, from the moment they enter the school, to environmental and citizenship issues, such as the separation of waste and reuse of materials», he explained. to Sul Informação the teacher Carla Almeida.

After Oceans Day, and “after the class reflected on what they could do to avoid plastics in the sea, the idea of changing habits arose, something that started right away in the classroom. So, instead of drinking the milk, which is provided by the school, in straws, the students started to bring a glass».

Another of the ideas that came up was to create a “Calhimeter”. Students made posters and their own straw meters to take home. Families have joined in a positive way and have even started to share other ways of reusing biodegradable materials and products.

Commercial establishments in Portimão have also accepted the challenge of putting up posters and making customers change their habits.

EMARP (Portimão Municipal Water and Waste Company) expressed interest in taking up the challenge and, for the next school year, the project will be continued with new initiatives.
