Silves honors José Vitoriano with a bust at Largo das Pimenteiras

José Vitoriano will be honored by the Municipality of Silves with the inauguration of a bust, on the 17th of June, at 18 pm, in Largo das Pimenteiras, next to the Cathedral.

According to the Municipality of Silves, "this is one of the ways chosen by the local authority to pay homage to this illustrious native of Silves, whose centenary was celebrated in 2017".

José Vitoriano was a cork worker, member of the Portuguese Communist Party, president of the National Union of Cork workers, anti-fascist resistant (17 years in captivity), leader of Sociedade Filarmónica Silvense, Silves Futebol Clube and Cooperativa “A Compensadora”. He was also deputy and vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic, having been distinguished with the Order of Freedom.

The Municipality of Silves considers that this is «a way of perpetuating his memory and life story, transmitting to new generations the pride of the municipality of Silves that saw him born, for having such an important personality in its history, a man who dedicated to his life to the struggle for the freedom and fundamental rights of the Portuguese people».
