An "unusual" exhibition, curated by Pedro Cabrita Reis, will be on display from 14 July to 15 September at Solar das Pontes de Marchil, in Faro, headquarters of the cultural association “289” (former headquarters of the Comandos Association).
This exhibition, entitled “289”, is the result of a project that unites the Farense association and the Portuguese plastic artist. In it, more than six dozen artists will be represented who "arrive from different times, from dispersed places and equally different wills".
«Challenged to occupy the space of the Solar, Pedro Cabrita Reis, with the broad gesture that draws it, brought many of his friends and even told them to bring many more. The gathering of all these people, although unpretentious as a summer thing, promises us almost the balance of an artistic situation and can reserve us many surprises, like an unexpected party», describes João Pinharanda, art historian and current adviser to Portuguese Embassy in Paris, in a text released by the “289” association.
The public will have the opportunity to appreciate creations by “very well-known” artists, but also by “lesser known names”, in what will be “a rare multitude of individual voices”.
«Here they present themselves, crossing each other, continuing old or recent meetings in a practice of permanent colloquium (with evident moments of solitude and many others of confrontation). In no case do they intend to draw conclusions; each voice (each authorship) must remain irreducible, in its own territory – only in this way can it be productive for itself, for other artists and for the public», adds João Pinharanda.
Some of the artists contributing to the exhibition were present in the @British Bar project, «which we can see since April 2017, in the three windows of the British Bar, in Lisbon, under the curatorship of Pedro Cabrita Reis. The others are part of the artists and other guests from the Algarve collective 289. All of these are also joined by artists that Cabrita Reis invited throughout the process».
The exhibition “289” opens at 19 pm on the 00th of July and can be seen until the 14th of September, from Wednesday to Sunday, from 15 pm to 17 pm, at Solar das Pontes de Marchil, on the way out of Faro to Loule.
