Lagoa was the city chosen, among a group of four candidates, to organize the VIII National Congress of the Portuguese Territorial Network of Educating Cities (RTPCE), which takes place from 15 to 18 May 2019.

The initiative will take place at the Centro de Congressos do Arade, in Parchal.

This is a meeting that intersperses with the international congress, which took place last year in the municipality of Guarda.

The 70 Portuguese cities that assume themselves as Educating Cities, five of them in the Algarve region (Lagoa, Loulé, Albufeira, Silves and Lagos) in a total of five hundred around the world, meet twice a year in congress, alternating national and international meetings each year.

This moment arises from the need to give visibility to Educating Cities in Portugal, sharing experiences, projects and good practices around education.

This year, the “right to the city” is being evoked by the fiftieth anniversary of the first edition of the book with the same name, by the French sociologist Henri Lefebvre. “The right to an educating city is proposed as an extension of the fundamental right of all individuals to education”, reads the 1st principle of the Charter of Educating Cities.

«The importance of the theme, the political commitment expressed with the Educating City and the geographical alternation of these congresses were distinguishing marks of Lagoa's candidacy», says the City Council.
