The classic «A Grande Illusão», made in 1937 by Jean Renoir, will be shown this Thursday, June 28, at 21 pm, in the auditorium of the Portimão Museum, in another edition of the «French Film of the Month».

It is Jean Renoir's most famous work, awarded at the Venice Film Festival in 1937, featuring famous names such as Erich Von Stroheim, Jean Gabin and Pierre Fresnay in the cast.

«The escapes from a German concentration camp by French prisoners of war (and the coexistence between the two languages in the film plays a fundamental role) were inspired by the memories of one of Renoir's war companions. But this pacifist vision is also an admirable reflection on class division: the aristocrats of countries at war (Pierre Fresnay and Erich Von Srtroheim) have greater affinities with each other than with the bourgeois and peasants of their armies. More than peace, the “great illusion” is this “solidarity” between antagonistic classes», wrote the Cinemateca Portuguesa.

As an organization of the Alliance Française do Algarve and the Grupo de Amigos do Museu de Portimão, admission is free.
