The Rio Arade Basic School, in Parchal (Lagoa), won 1st place in the P awards.Galp's Power UP Educational Project, in the 2017-2018 school year. The final and awards ceremony took place on Friday, June 8, at Fundação Serralves, in Porto.

In this project, the Rio Arade Schools Group participated in the 9thB class, with teacher Cristina Jesus, a Physical Chemistry teacher.

The Power UP Project is a challenge on education for energy efficiency launched by Galp in 2nd and 3rd cycle schools across the country. The focus is on energy sources, sustainable mobility, the energy footprint and professions associated with energy.

In a universe of 106 participating schools, 28 participated in the final competition, from which the three schools that developed the best works related to the proposed themes, throughout the 2017/2018 school year, came out.

The students of the 9thB class were distinguished not only for their approach to various topics of energy efficiency and transmission of knowledge to 1st cycle students, but also for their involvement and interaction with the community, research and use of pedagogical tools.

Its practical activities of sustainable mobility, dynamization of energy classes for younger colleagues and construction of solar ovens were considered the best nationally.

As prizes, the Rio Arade Basic School won a Galp Frota card worth 500 euros, a pedagogical visit to a Ciência Viva Centre, hotspots and fuel discount vouchers for teachers involved in the project, and Ciência Viva Circuits for members of the winning team.

The awards ceremony was attended by the students of the class, teacher Cristina Jesus, responsible for the project, as well as Luís Varela, deputy director of AERA.

Participating in this ceremony was also an opportunity for some of the students in the class to travel by plane for the first time, between Faro and Porto, in an experience provided by their performance in the project.

This recognition, within the scope of the development of initiatives on energy efficiency, was added to the electric vehicle (Renault ZOE) awarded to AERA under the 1st phase of the Support Program for Electric Mobility in Public Administration, being the only school unit to receive a vehicle at this stage, whose delivery took place on the 13th of April, at the headquarters of the school.
