The Green Key program, an international award that promotes sustainable tourism in Portugal, through the recognition of tourist establishments, local accommodation, campsites and restaurants that implement good environmental and social practices, has just distinguished 10 accommodation units in the Algarve, the double of those awarded in 2017.

The award ceremony took place this Thursday, June 7th, in Lisbon.

The Blue Flag Association of Europe, which coordinates the national programme, this year awarded the Green Key awards to the following tourist establishments in the Algarve for their good environmental conduct: Conrad Algarve hotel, in Quinta do Lago (Almancil, Loulé), Hilton Vilamoura hotel As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa, Vilamoura, Pine Cliffs Hotel, Albufeira, Vila Galé Albacora hotel, Tavira, Aqua Pedra dos Bicos Design Beach Hotel, Albufeira, Vale D'El Rei Hotel & Villas, Lagoa, Velamar Boutique Hotel, in Albufeira, Casa Vale da Lama, agritourism unit in Odiáxere (Lagos), hostel Casa Biota – Este, in Sagres (Vila do Bispo) and Casa Biota – Oeste, local accommodation unit in Sagres (Vila do Bispo).

Desidério Silva, president of the Algarve Tourism Region, congratulates the nominated accommodation units.

«It is with great satisfaction that I congratulate all these accommodations, who worked hard to obtain this award. This is further proof that the Algarve is moving towards sustainable tourism, always focusing on social, economic and environmental benefits. It is very important that we continue on this path, as this is the only way we can be considered an international tourist reference destination».

The “Green Key” program's main objectives are to raise awareness for the adoption of sustainable practices and behaviors, the reduction of the environmental impact of commercial activities and the promotion of reduction and efficiency in the consumption of natural resources.
