The José Saramago Municipal Library, in Odemira, will host next Friday, May 18, from 10:30 am, the inter-municipal phase of the National Reading Competition.

Students from all levels of education from the five municipalities in the region will participate in this initiative.

This competition is promoted by the National Reading Plan, in partnership with the General Directorate of Books, Archives and Libraries and with the School Libraries Network, in conjunction with RTP. The Municipal Library of Odemira was invited to assume the responsibility for organizing the Intermunicipal Phase of Alentejo Litoral.

The competition, which aims to encourage and enjoy reading and to promote knowledge of different authors and literary styles, takes place in several phases throughout the school year, starting in schools and then passing through the municipal and intermunicipal phases.

The competition will have 18 students from 11 schools in the municipalities of Alcácer do Sal, Grândola, Odemira, Santiago do Cacém and Sines. Throughout the day, students will be challenged to demonstrate their skills in expressive reading, knowledge of works and authors, vocabulary, comprehension and argumentation.

In the end, eight winners will be selected, two for each level of education (1st cycle, 2nd cycle, 3rd cycle and secondary education), who will represent the Intermunicipal Community of Alentejo Litoral in the final of the National Reading Contest, which will take place on the 10th of June.

The event will feature three cultural moments, through the presentation of a short story set to music by Sheila Kamayd and Guilherme Campos, ballroom dances by Martim Reis and Beatriz Robles, from Academia Dança Mais, and the performance of Trio de Guitarras, from Escola Basic 2, 3 Damião de Odemira.
