Two candidates, 32 voting for to convince. Desidério Silva and João Fernandes will compete for the presidency of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), in an election scheduled for May 11, at 15:XNUMX. Currently, the two candidates occupy, respectively, the positions of president and vice president of this entity, but this time, they will be on opposite sides of the barricade.

The List Candidate João Fernandes for the presidency of the Executive Committee of the RTA and has Elidérico Viegas, president of the Association of Hotels and Touristic Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA), as a candidate for the presidency of the Board of the General Assembly of this body.

List B is only a candidate for the Executive Committee and is headed by the current president of the Algarve Tourism Board Desidério Silva.

The decision of who will be the next president of the Algarve Tourism Region is up to an electoral college where the 16 municipalities of the region sit, a member of the CCDR do Algarve representing the State, 13 business associations (a 14th is temporarily unable to vote ) and two unions.

The socialist João Fernandes is going to this election with the support of the ten mayors of the PS in Algarve and, it is guessed, with the guaranteed votes of the representative of the Government and of AHETA, who belongs to the electoral college.

This means that, to win, Desidério Silva, former mayor of Albufeira for the PSD, will have to guarantee the votes of the social-democratic mayors (and, eventually, of the communist Rosa Palma) and a good part of the other voters, among business associations and private entities linked to the tourism sector and unions.

In addition to AHETA and the two trade union centrals - UGT and CGTP -, the Associations of Hotel and Similar Industries of the Algarve (AIHSA), of Commerce and Services of the Algarve Region (ACRAL), Portuguese of Agencies of Algarve have seats in the General Assembly of the RTA Travel and Tourism (APAVT), from the Driverless Light Car Hire Industries (ARAC), Portuguese Association of Recreational Ports (APPR), Business Nucleus of the Algarve Region (NERA), Confederation of Entrepreneurs of the Algarve (CEAL), Association Portuguesa de Casinos (APC), Rota Vicentina – Association for the Promotion of Nature Tourism, National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) and Algarve Anima – Association of Tourist Entertainment Companies of the Algarve.

The Portuguese Association of Health and Well-Being Tourism (APTSBE), despite having a statutorily seat in the RTA General Assembly, cannot vote, as it is in the middle of a name change process.

Thus, although João Fernandes starts, in theory, in a more advantageous position, due to the support he has from family socialist, there are still many “loose” votes, which leave the outcome of the vote open.
