The Intervention Group for Protection and Relief (GIPS) of the GNR received this Friday, the 25th of May, eight new all-terrain vehicles to reinforce the actions of forest inspection and combat of first intervention in fires, announced yesterday the Ministry of the Internal Administration (MAI).

The day before, in Portimão, during the presentation of the Special Rural Fire Fighting Device (DECIR) at regional level, the regional operational commander of Civil Protection announced that the Algarve will also have a permanent, year-round GIPS attack group, made up of 30 soldiers and seven vehicles.

This year GNR's GIPS were reinforced throughout the country, going from 594 to 1.064 elements, and will be used to fight fires in all districts of the continent, as well as in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The vehicles were acquired under POSEUR – Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources.

POSEUR, in Priority Axis 2, in the priority intervention domain “Reduction of forest fires” includes support for the Acquisition of Operational Protection and Relief Vehicles, with a view to strengthening the operational response capacity of the Special Device for Combating Rural Fires (DECIDE).

“The financial support in this domain aims to guarantee the operationality of the security device, contributing to respond to the needs of investment in equipment and operational structures”, adds the Ministry of Internal Administration.
