A 5,6% increase in the number of overnight stays, to more than 2,2 million overnights, and an 8,1% increase in the number of guests, to 520 thousand euros, compared to the previous year, are some of the data just released by the National Institute of Statistics on tourist activity in the first quarter of this year in the Algarve.

As for total income, it grew by «11,5% to 88,1 million euros between January and March of this year».

Overnight stays spent by the Portuguese in the Algarve grew by 25,1% during this period (+14,6% in February), while the external markets showed a less significant increase, in the order of 2,3% (-1,2% in February).

If we only analyze the numbers for March, also just published, the monthly performance of the destination is higher than that of the quarter, reaching 10,7% more in overnight stays, 18,1% more in guests and 17,2% more in income.

The explanation for these significant results of the Algarve hotel industry, which follows the rest of the country, is given by INE: «they were influenced by the calendar effect of the Easter period, with an impact at the end of March».

The institute also mentions that in March “the internal market accelerated”, registering a higher growth than the external one, a trend that has been verified in the region since the beginning of the year.

The first quarter of 2018 is also marked by accumulated results similar to those of the previous year achieved at the Algarve golf courses (327,5 thousand golf rounds) and at the airport of Faro (902,7 thousand passengers handled).
