The rising tide caused, this dawn, overtopping in Praia de Faro that destroyed pedestrian accesses and also caused “minimal damage” to esplanades.

Steven Piedade, president of the Parish Council of Montenegro, told the Sul Informação that the sea began to climb the dune around 4:45 in the morning, when «nothing could predict this situation, since there was a warning from the IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere) of maritime agitation, but on the west coast. This situation was essentially due to the amplitude of the tide”.

Access to the eastern part of the beach was restricted but, according to the mayor, “it is already practically guaranteed. Our main concern was to guarantee the mobility of those who live here, so that they can go to work».

This afternoon, the problems could be repeated, as a new high tide is scheduled for 17:30 pm and “overtopping could happen again, since the tide is expected to rise even more than this morning”.

Bruno Gonçalves, amateur meteorologist, responsible for the website “Meteophons", explained to our newspaper that with Lua Nova the tides are higher and that this situation can be described as a spring tide.
