Maritime Minister Ana Paula Vitorino announced an investment of around 750 thousand euros in the Vila Real de Santo António municipality, as well as the launch, this year, of a tender worth 870 thousand euros for the navigability of the Guadiana River to Pomarão, during a visit to VRSA on Friday.

The government official was in this Algarve county to inaugurate the work to refurbish the VRSA transfrontier wharf, from which the Guadiana international river route operates. In this work, 334 euros were invested.

At the ceremony, Ana Paula Vitorino announced the reconstruction of the Guadiana River jetty, damaged by the storms that ravaged the region in March, and the creation of a new embarkation pier, in the Vila Real de Santo António riverside area, intended for the maritime-tourism companies, works that, together, will cost more than 750 thousand euros.

During the visit, «the Minister of the Sea undertook to advance, this year, with the recovery of the jetty on the Guadiana River, a structure that suffered several damages during this winter's storms», according to the Chamber of VRSA.

The work will be carried out by the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services (DGRM) and is "budgeted at 550 thousand euros".

"On the Government's list of priorities, the reconstruction of the second VRSA wharf by Docapesca was also announced," added the municipality of Vila Real.

The intervention has a cost of 200 euros and will be «fundamental to provide more attractiveness and safety conditions to all maritime-tourist companies operating in the Guadiana», believes the president of the VRSA City Council.

Another intention expressed by Ana Paula Vitorino was to move forward with the second phase of dredging the Guadiana River, in the section between Alcoutim and Pomarão.

“The contest is expected to be launched this year and is valued at 870 thousand euros. It is estimated that the operation could start in 2019”, according to the Chamber of VRSA.
