The debut of the orchestration of “Suite Al-Gharb” is one of the highlights of the concert “Iberia”, the next proposal of FIMA – Algarve International Music Festival, which will take the stage of the Municipal Auditorium of Lagoa, this Friday, April 6th, at 21 pm.

In this show, in addition to the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, directed by British conductor Martin André, will also be present Gaëlle Solal, «an absolutely fantastic guitarist», in the words of Rui Pinheiro, artistic director of the festival.

The concert will be dedicated to the Iberian theme. Portugal and Spain will unite for the music of modernist composers.

This “journey” will begin in the Algarve with “the premiere of a play by Tomás de Lima, written at the beginning of the century [1941], called Suite Al-Gharb. There are eight movements describing small scenes from the Algarve, from various parts of the region, from the beaches... It's very interesting to be able to do a work like this, at this festival, in the Algarve, because it didn't make sense anywhere else», explained Rui Pinheiro to the program Impressions, powered by Sul Informação and STREET FM.

Gaille Solal

For the principal conductor of the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, according to “my vision of what an international festival should be, there should be international artists, but we cannot neglect the regional side. We are in the Algarve and we want to do this for the people who live here. If this is a festival that could be heard in London or New York? Some concerts yes, others I think they only make sense here, for this audience, for the Algarve, through certain types of themes and works», such as this one that will be presented in Lagoa.

In addition to that piece, the Concert of Aranjuez, by J. Rodrigo, performed by soloist Gaëlle Solal, a Suite Love Brujo,  by M. Falla, which contains the “Ritual Dance of Fire”, and two melodies for strings, by Freitas Branco.

Directing this concert will be the British Martin André, «whose performances are always marked by a keen sense of style and a contagious energy», emphasizes the FIMA organization.

Martin André is the only conductor who has directed all the great British opera companies.
