This Friday, the song will have a fragrance, in Tavira. The Orquestra Clássica do Sul (OCS), directed by conductor Rui Pinheiro, will perform, in a world premiere, the work “Sillages”, composed by Bruno Gil Soeiro, during the concert “Os Sons e os Perfumes”, which will take place today , on April 20, at 21 pm, at Igreja do Carmo, in that city.

This is another concert by 2018 edition of FIMA – Algarve International Music Festival and a show with a special taste (and odor). This work was composed for the OCS by Bruno Gil, associate composer of the Algarve orchestra in 2018, and will be presented for the first time.

The show “Sillages” is inspired by the different families of fragrances, which, as he explained to the Sul Informação the composer Bruno Gil, «are divided into frescoes, florals, woody and oriental. Within these four categories, there can be numerous combinations, but usually fragrances are associated with one of them».

«The play has four movements, each inspired by one of these categories. People will have samples of each of the perfumes and can go on sniffing while they listen to the music», she revealed to our newspaper.

A proposal from this edition of FIMA that is, at the very least, original and aims to awaken the public's senses, providing them with an unprecedented experience.

Bruno Gil Soeiro

«When I started working on the piece, the idea came to me to explore the extent to which other senses, associated with music, can change a person's perception of that music. This becomes something very personal, as each of us will identify with the piece in a different way, each of us will have our own interpretation. I think this can be very interesting, as it leaves the piece open and allows people to draw their own conclusions», believes Bruno Gil.

Each of the movements of “Sillages” will have “a different style, a different type of orchestration and will try to create sound images of each of the fragrances”.

«The first [fresco] is a maritime movement, which tries to recreate the waves of the sea and all that breeze from the ocean. Then, in the second movement, the floral ones, there are small notes in the woodwinds, which try to give the idea of this somewhat floral atmosphere».

Then, he said, “we will focus on the woody ones. The title of the 3rd movement is "ramets“, the term used in biology for fungi and plants that clone themselves. It starts in a very simple way and then it “clones” and transforms as it progresses», described the Portuguese composer to the Sul Informação.

The last part “is an oriental movement, using percussion instruments from Japan and China, which gives it a special color right away”.

Rui Pinheiro

Rui Pinheiro, FIMA's artistic director, said, in an interview with Sul Informação and to Rádio Universitária do Algarve RUA FM, as guest of the radio program “Impressões”, that «the essences and fragrances will be sprayed in the room itself», in what will be a sensory experience, a little away from the classic and orthodox format».

This does not mean that the principal conductor of the OCS, the entity that promotes the FIMA, considers that what is classic and orthodox «is bad». “We want to offer different things and I think this is the logic behind the programming of this festival”, said the conductor.

In addition to the work “Sillages”, this Friday's concert at the Igreja do Carmo de Tavira will also feature the performance of “Symphony no. 6, Pastoral”, by Beethoven, which will have been publicly performed for the first time in 1808 , in Vienna.

Anyone who is in the Igreja do Carmo de Tavira this evening should bring "well-honed senses", advises Bruno Gil. «It will be a new experience and I believe it will be pleasant», summarized the composer of “Sillages”.

Tickets cost 10 euros and can be purchased at the venue, on the day of the event from 20 pm, or at the online box office.
