Portimão's historic center

Portimão is once again, on the 24th and 25th of March, a meeting point for the Algarve's Urban Sketchers.

The initiative comes within the scope of the National Day of Historic Centers.

On the first day there will be a drawing workshop and, on the morning of Sunday, March 25th, this group organizes the Urban Sketchers Meeting, where the nooks and crannies of Portimão will be drawn.

The drawing workshop will have the theme “Distorted perspectives: architecture and people” and will be in charge of trainers António Procópio and Pedro Loureiro, both architects and members of the Urban Sketchers Algarve group.

With the collaboration of ISMAT- Instituto Manuel Teixeira Gomes, the initiative takes place from 10:00 am to 13:00 pm and from 14:30 pm to 17:30 pm. Participation is free, and the workshop is open to all those who like to draw.

As necessary material, free drawing tools and A5 or A4 notebooks are recommended. Interested parties can obtain information and register via the email [email protected]

On Sunday, from 10:00 am, TEMPO - Portimão Municipal Theater will be the starting point for a journey through the streets of the city center where participants can portray their architectural works or focus on the experiences that characterize it, depending on the preferences of each designer.

Everyone is welcome, whether amateurs or professionals, «since the main objective is to attract people who have never drawn to join Urban Sketchers and share knowledge, perfecting techniques». Interested parties can obtain information and register via the following email: [email protected]

Both initiatives take place within the scope of the municipality's program of activities at the level of the ARU- Historic Center of Portimão, with the objective of keeping alive the memory of the city and enabling the involvement and participation of the community in the urban rehabilitation process, and have the support of ISMAT, and this year it is also part of the March Young program.

This is the 3rd edition of the Urban Sketchers Algarve Meeting in Portimão with the support of the Municipality of Portimão, which last year brought to the city more than twenty authors, mainly from the western Algarve who, on that occasion, recorded different experiences in the center historic.

«Urban designers are known for spending hours in the same place, absorbing the details that escape the inattentive gaze of those who pass there daily. They record their work in the graphic diary — that's the name of the notebook in which their sketches appear», says the Câmara de Portimão.

Urban Sketchers Algarve are a collective of authors who draw the Algarve Region in graphic diaries in this case and meet to draw punctually in accordance with the Urban Sketchers Manifesto.
