Eight Algarve municipalities adhere to "Earth Hour" and turn off lights for an hour

Faro, Portimão, Loulé, Olhão, Lagos, Albufeira, Silves and Lagoa will join “Earth Hour”. On March 24, from 20:30 pm to 21:30 pm, public buildings in the municipalities will have their lights turned off, in an act of environmental concern. 

In Loulé, for example, the following buildings will remain dark: Paços do Concelho, Engº Duarte Pacheco Building (Municipal Assembly), Monument to Eng. Duarte Pacheco, Loulé Municipal Market, Cine-Teatro Louletano, Loulé Castle Wall , Parish Council of S. Sebastião, Parish Council of S. Clemente, Municipal Center of Quarteira and Parish Council of Quarteira, Parish Council of Salir, Parish Union buildings in Querença, Tôr and Benafim and Parish Council of Boliqueime.

In Silves, the lights of the Paços do Concelho, Castelo and Sé will be turned off. In the remaining municipalities, it is also known that they will participate, but the buildings that will have the lights turned off are not known.

As for Lagoa, the lights of the the Paços do Concelho building, the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação Fort, the Carvoeiro Walkway, the Arade Congress Center and the elevated warehouses of Estômbar, Lagoa, Sesmarias and Porches, as well as some hotel units and parish councils, will have the lights off. 

In Albufeira, between 20 pm and 30 pm, the Albufeira Town Hall will turn off all the lights (indoor and outdoor) of the Paços do Concelho building, Lídia Jorge Municipal Library, João Bailote Municipal Gallery, Main Church and Sant'Ana Church , while inviting the population to join the initiative, turning off the lighting in their homes.

In addition to turning off the lights, the municipality will promote in its own media at its disposal (website, facebook and screens
LCD, existing in various municipal equipment) the dissemination of the video "Energy and Climate Change",
held, in the 2016/2017 school year, by the 9th grade class, from Escola EB 2,3 Profa Diamantina Negrão, within the scope of
project with the same name, developed by the Municipality in partnership with 3rd Cycle and Teaching Schools
Secondary, the Regional Agency for Energy and Environment (AREAL) and the General Directorate of School Establishments.

Odemira, in Alentejo, will also turn off the lighting in the Paços do Município building, in the Sociocultural Development Division building, in Moinho de Vento, in Praça Sousa Prado, as well as the scenic lighting in the lower part of the road bridge deck over the Mira River. The lighting in the Public Garden of Vila Nova de Milfontes will also be turned off.

“Earth Hour” is a global environmental initiative by World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF), founded in 1961, which invites individuals, businesses, governments and communities to turn off the light for one hour.

As one of the first campaigns on climate change, the “Time do Planet" it has grown from a symbolic event in a single city to the world's largest environmental movement.

A "Time do Planet" in 2017, for example, it reached 180 countries and territories, more than 9000 cities and towns. In Portugal, 140 municipalities joined and hundreds of national emblematic monuments were left in the dark, such as the 25 de Abril Bridge, the Jerónimos Monastery and the Cristo Rei, in Lisbon. In 2018, the "Time do Planet" it wants to harness the power of its millions of supporters around the world to change the course of climate change.

 

All citizens are also invited to participate in this initiative.
