The São Brás de Alportel forest sapper team was officially created on March 15, after the hiring of the five elements that will compose it.
This team will work «in the area of preventive forestry, in the area of forest fuel management using manual techniques, manual, mechanical or controlled fire, among others», according to the City Council of São Brás de Alportel.
Another task of forest sappers is «the maintenance and protection of forest stands within the scope of forest management and the control of harmful biotic agents, general forestry, maintenance and improvement of infrastructures to protect the forest and support forest management. other works that the group will carry out».
“This is a team much desired by the people of São Brasenses, with a relevant mission that requires a lot of commitment. We trust that they will be effective in their work to defend our rich natural and human heritage», believes Vítor Guerreiro, Mayor of São Brás de Alportel.
Forest firefighters are a first line of forest fire prevention, not only because of the work they do outside the most critical time for the occurrence of fires, but also because of their surveillance and first intervention, as well as their support for aftermath operations.
The constitution of this team, in the municipality of São Brás de Alportel, took place after the approval of an application presented by the municipality to a program launched by the Government.
“Across the country, 20 out of 120 applications were approved. Each approved candidacy includes the delivery of a properly equipped vehicle, to the value of 40 thousand euros”, which the São Brasense municipality received on 3 August, at a ceremony held in Oliveira do Hospital presided over by Prime Minister António Costa.
"Alongside the vehicle, the Government allocated financial support to cover, during the first five years, the expenses necessary for the constitution of a team of five municipal forest sappers," added the City of São Brás.
