The towns of Mexilhoeira Grande and Figueira, in the municipality of Portimão, will now be connected by a pedestrian walkway along Estrada da Fonte. The Portimonense Chamber approved the construction of this infrastructure, which will cost more than 280 thousand euros and will be ready three months after its award.

The pedestrian promenade will extend «between the junction of Estrada Fonte and Rua Main da Figueira and the intersection with Rua de São Pedro, on the Mexilhoeira Grande side», according to the Municipality of Portimão, which says it is responding, with this project, the «an old and fair claim» of the inhabitants of this parish.

The layout of the path to be created was «very conditioned by the existing constructions», which led to the choice of «a solution in which the 1,6 meter wide sidewalk will be built a part to the north of the road and another part to the south, guaranteeing the execution of a crosswalk to allow the pedestrian route to always be made along the sidewalk».

“The widening of the pier that crosses the Ribeira do Farelo was also conceived and three pockets were defined to allow the stop of the coaches, outside the carriageway, contrary to what happens today”, added the local authority.

In addition to creating the sidewalk itself, this work will also involve the installation of a «pipe for the collection of rainwater, which starts at the intersection of Estrada Fonte and Rua de São Pedro, and which will have to connect to Ribeira do Farelo» , taking into account that the new infrastructure will occupy an area that now functions as a water line.

The project also includes the repaving of the road.
