SOS Ria Formosa will maintain, "in the near future, a channel of communication with the Presidency of the Republic in order to exchange information" on the process of demolitions in the nuclei of the Faroof the Hangars of the island of Culatra, announced the move.

Two representatives of the group of islanders were received this Monday in Belém by Nuno Sampaio, advisor for the environment area of the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to whom they conveyed «concerns with the process of demolitions and recognition of the nuclei of the Farole Hangares».

«The enormous discomfort and revolt that this entire process is causing among the populations was broadcast, as well as numerous contradictions related to the various statutes in force in the Ria Formosa area were presented. For the same or similar situations, the treatments are very different and while there is an opening, and rightly so, for concessions and recognition statutes for some of the agglomerates of Ria Formosa, in the nuclei of the Farole Hangares, the option is to demolish or renaturalize instead of re-qualifying itself», according to SOS Ria Formosa.

José Lezinho and Vanessa Morgado, the two representatives of the islanders, also recalled that «more than a year after the approval by the majority of the recognition of the Centers of the Faroof the Hangars by the Assembly of the Republic, nothing seems to have been done to definitively effect this recognition».

The meeting also addressed issues such as the review of the expired Land Use Plan for the Sotavento Coastal Coast and the constructions that are "licensed and permitted, both in the Ria Formosa and elsewhere in the Algarve", and which are less than 40 meters away of the water line.

SOS asked Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “to intercede with decision-makers, so that all these problems can be resolved without resorting to demolitions, or that, in the most complicated cases, the inhabitants be given the possibility to relocate the their dwellings in one of the numerous spaces within the nuclei. A solution that we have always advocated for situations where there is actually some risk. Demolition for demolition is not a solution, not least because there is no plan of protection for the barrier islands».
