In 2017, the Mértola Museum registered the largest number of visitors ever. 46426 entries were registered, 8071 more than in the previous year.

«This total refers only to the entries in the nucleus of the Igreja Matriz, the most visited, however the increase in visitation was verified in all the nucleuses», explains the City Council of that village of Guadiana.

Of this total, 52% refer to foreign visitors and 48% to national visitors. Of the foreign markets, Germany stands out, representing 28% of foreign visitors, France 17%, Spain 14%, Brazil 9% and the Netherlands 7%.

The municipality of Mertolense also highlights “the growth of the North American market, with the United States and Canada representing 4% of visitors”. Finally, the Italian market represented 4% of all foreign visitors.

"The significant growth of tourists in the territory results from the continuous and articulated work of the Municipality, companies and oversight entities to structure and promote the tourist offer of Mértola and the Alentejo region in the internal and external markets", adds the Chamber of Mértola, in a statement press release.
