This Sunday, February 190, 18 volunteers collected 1400 kilos of garbage in Ilha Deserta (Faro).

According to Straw Patrol, who organized the initiative, «the vast majority of the garbage was associated with lost fishing gear such as pots and other traps for octopuses (which were often buried), cables, ropes, buoys, various nets».

This cleaning, carried out along about 5 kilometers of coastline, also picked up other types of garbage, such as several plastic and glass bottles, clothes, a bicycle, a barbecue and a freezer.

«Despite the immense effort, commitment and work of the volunteers, the garbage collected represents only a small part of what was found on Ilha Deserta. A lot of garbage has yet to be collected», alerts Straw Patrol.

In addition to the waste collected, “two dolphins and several dead sea birds were also found. This information was thus forwarded to the Maritime Police detachment of Faro».

This cleaning was organized by Straw Patrol in collaboration with the maritime tourism company Animaris (which offered the transport of volunteers to the island) and the Center for Biology Students of the University of Algarve (NEBUA) and also had the support of the Estaminé restaurant, FAGAR, the Yves Rocher Foundation and the company Ansell Portugal.
