Fall in temperature and snow on Friday and Saturday, including in the Serra de Monchique, is forecast by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

On Friday, January 5th, due to the passage of a cold frontal surface, periods of rain are expected, which will be locally heavy, extending to the southern region throughout the morning.

The rain should change to a regime of showers that may occasionally be hail and accompanied by thunder, and which gradually decrease in frequency throughout the afternoon.

Snowfall is expected in the highlands above 1500 meters of altitude from dawn, gradually descending the level to 800/1000 meters of altitude.

On the 6th, Saturday, showers should be infrequent, and more likely on the coast, although they may occasionally be hail accompanied by thunder, and in the form of snow above 600/800 meters of altitude. It is on this day that the snow can reach Fóia, the top of the Serra de Monchique.

The wind will be moderate to strong from the southwest, temporarily with gusts up to 60/70 km/h especially on the coast, blowing strong to very strong with gusts up to 90 km/h in the highlands.

After passing the cold front surface, the wind will rotate to the northwest, and will tend to weaken. However, it should become moderate to strong and with gusts on days 6 and 7 on the coast and in the highlands.

From the end of the afternoon of Friday, the 5th, the waves should rise again on the west coast, and on the 6th to 7th, they should have significant heights between 4 and 6 meters.

Between Friday and Saturday, the minimum temperature should drop between 10 and 15°C, with values below 0°C in the highlands of the North and Center in the early hours of Saturday.

The maximum temperature will also drop, although not so sharply, and should be below 13ºC in the majority of the territory, and with values below 6ºC in the northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta.
