In 2017, the monuments belonging to the Regional Directorate of Culture registered the highest number of visitors in the last 20 years, with 441.276 entries registered. 

The total number of visitors to the Monuments overseen by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve with entrance control, which include the Fortress of Sagres, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, in Raposeira (Vila do Bispo), the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, in Portimão , and the Roman Ruins of Milreu, in Estoi (Faro) again recorded, in 2017, an increase of around 19,62%.

It's that 72.375 more visitors were counted than in 2016.

The Sagres Fortress, which in 2017 completed 20 years of opening to the public, also marked the best year of influx of visits, consolidating its position as one of the great national monuments.

«As is natural, in these heritage spaces, foreigners are the ones who flock the most, in a percentage of 82,87% against 17,13% of nationals», says the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

This trend was contradicted in the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, where the number of nationals (50,90%) surpasses foreigners (49,10%).

"Oh project for the promotion and enhancement of Monuments – DiVaM –, this year, in its 4th edition, it has also contributed to a greater influx of entries to the Monuments, particularly from nearby populations and school students, with a 57,78% increase in visits by school students, compared to 2016”, he explains.

«These values ​​are gratifying for the entire technical staff of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and for the coordinators and collaborators of these spaces» who, together, work «to improve and enhance them, seeking to overcome the various limitations that have been verified and encountered. means of financing and upgrading monuments that include candidacies, patronage and partnerships with other entities».
