The exhibition of iron sculptures “In the absence of the body. Stories from other ages”, by Rui Matos, will be on display from 12 January to 3 March, at the Convento Espírito Santo Art Gallery, in Loulé.

This is an exhibition of 12 iron works in which, according to the artist, «the sculpture is made of feelings».

«Drawing in three-dimensional space. Not building a body or a building, but an imaginary space. The purpose is not in the object, but in the act of designing, delimiting, organizing, directing», he considers.

Rui Matos was born in Lisbon, in 1959, lives and works near Sintra. He attended the Sculpture Course at the Lisbon Higher School of Fine Arts, between 1980 and 1987, and in 1993, he received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

His first solo exhibition was in 1987, in Lisbon, with sculptures in slate. This was followed in 1989 by “Mediterranean” with Isabel Augusta (Cooperativa Árvore, Porto) and “Primeira Ilha” (Colares Gallery), with sculptures in cast bronze.

As for his first exhibition with works in stone, it took place in 1991 – “Enormity, Sequence and Shipwreck” (Galeria Carvalho and Araújo, Braga), followed by “Transformations – Uncertain Reports” (Cubic Gallery, Lisbon), “Objetos de Memória” ” (Giefarte, Lisbon) and “Incomplete Stories” (Gallery Cubic, Lisbon).

In 2008, he began working with iron, presenting the exhibitions “A Pele das Estrelas” (Teatro Camões, Lisbon), “I transform myself into what I touch” (Giefarte, Lisbon), “Inside” (Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações) and “Transmutations” (Sá da Costa, Lisbon).

He also carried out several interventions and public works, such as the “Monument to the Sailors' Revolt of 1936”, in Almada, “Monumento à Água” at the São Pedro do Sul Secondary School, Sculpture depicting the poet João Ruiz Castelo-Branco, at Parque dos Poetas in Oeiras, public sculpture on Estrada do Guincho, next to Boca do Inferno, in Cascais, or Monument to Luís de Camões with Clara Menéres, in Paris.

The exhibition “In the absence of the body. Stories of Other Ages” opens at 18:00 pm on January 12th and can be visited from Tuesday to Friday, from 9:30 am to 17:30 pm, and on Saturdays, from 9:30 am to 16:00 pm.
