Desidério Silva, president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), appealed, in a letter sent to Adalberto Campos Fernandes, minister of Health, to resolve “the state of health services in the Algarve immediately”.

Desiderio Silva

In the letter, the president of the RTA points out the reports of how “people (residents and tourists) are being treated, especially the elderly, who use the emergency services of the Hospitals of the Algarve and particularly the one of Faro».

Both the insufficiency and the deficient quality of the «hospital and health services in the region, in addition to being regrettable, cause, in residents and tourists, distrust and fears regarding the capacity to respond when people need urgent access to these services». considers Desidério Silva.

For this reason, the official argues that «the Algarve itself is being questioned», «a tourist destination of excellence», awarded worldwide, and «whose revenues contribute substantially to the country's wealth».

Furthermore, the situation is “at a time when competing tourism markets are recovering, threatening tourism flows to the Algarve”, he says.

Desidério Silva says that his claim is made "mainly for the fundamental right of the Algarve and visitors" to humane and efficient health services that meet "particularly the needs of the most needy and unprotected".

However, Ana Paula Gonçalves, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hospital and University Center of the Algarve (CHUA), assured the Sul Informação, that the Algarve hospitals will receive new nurses and that more beds will be made available for inpatients.
