The City Council of Lagos will chair the Board of the Portuguese Association of Municipalities with a Historic Center (APMCH) for the period 2018-2022. The APMCH Elective General Assembly for the election of the Association's Social Bodies took place this Friday, January 19, in Ponte de Lima.

The Câmara de Lagos recalls that the city «has occupied a prominent place in the APMCH Governing Bodies since the 90s, having belonged to its governing bodies, as member of the Supervisory Board, member of the Board and as vice-president of the Board of Directors» .

In addition, adds the municipality, "this Municipality hosts one of the Association's two Regional Delegations, the Regional Delegation of the Algarve, the first to be created in 1996."

At a technical level, the Lagos City Council is represented by the architect Frederico Mendes Paula, on the jury of the Alexandre Herculano National Architecture Award, since its creation in 2001. The municipality has participated in the drafting of the regulations for this award and has been in its presidency since 2010, as well as on the Board of Curators of Portuguese Historic Centers, since 2014.

For the Mayor of Lagos, Maria Joaquina Matos, «Lagos has always held a prominent position and an effective and interested participation in the life of the Association, having frequently presented proposals to improve its action, collaborating with articles in the Revista Centros Historical and actively participated in the various National Meetings, Conventions and other events, with technical communications presented, specifically in Nazaré, Lagos, Lamego, Angra do Heroísmo and Tavira».

For this reason, the mayor thought that this was the time to present herself as a candidate for the presidency of the Board, «a logical corollary of this continuous and coherent path, in order to give one more effective collaboration for the effectiveness and prestige of the Portuguese Association of Municipalities with Historic center".

According to Maria Joaquina Matos, this mandate will be guided by the «continuity of the work carried out by the previous directors, seeking to improve some aspects of their functioning, take decisions on some pending issues and seek to strengthen the Association, in terms of members and resources, and weight in the life of the Municipalities and support to members in the major problems of safeguarding and rehabilitating Historic Centres, through greater dialogue with the bodies of the Central and Regional Power and providing information on technical aspects and financing for Urban Rehabilitation».
