"There is a 90% chance" that the juvenile sperm whale that had run aground on the beach yesterday Monte Gordo be the same one who appeared dead today, on the beach on the island of Armona (Olhão).

In statements to the Sul Informação, Nunes Ferreira, captain of Porto de Olhão, said that "a necropsy" will confirm whether it is the same sperm whale, as well as the causes of its death.

The alert was given by fishermen. The cetacean was eventually brought to the port of Olhão, where it was removed from the water with the help of a crane.

The sperm whale has already been sent to the Sotavento Sanitary Landfill, where it will later be incinerated.

Yesterday, January 1st, at 8:00 am, people walking on the beach at Monte Gordo, namely members of the triathlon club of Vila Real de Santo António, they noticed that there was a whale stranded near the beach.

For hours, in the water, about a dozen volunteers tried to prevent the animal from coming ashore, where it could injure itself. Around 13:30 pm, and with the help of the National Maritime Authority, through the lifeboat, the cetacean, which came to be identified as a juvenile sperm whale, measuring about 10 meters, ended up returning to the high seas.

For some time, the animal was even accompanied by the lifeguard. But today, apparently, he turned up dead in the Armona sands, a few kilometers further on.

the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is the largest toothed cetacean as well as the largest toothed animal in existence today. It measures up to 15 meters in length, in its adult phase.
