A bicentennial canvas, which frames the Altar of Our Lady of Victory, at St. Peter's Church, in Faro, has now been restored and displayed for «appreciation of all».

This painted canvas, representing “Boca de Cena”, «was in a poor state of conservation», which «prevented the enjoyment of the set with the Altar of Nossa Senhora da Vitória, a Rococo style mark, of unknown authorship, but dating from the XNUMXth century», says the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

For example, over the years the nails that were used to fix the canvas began to rust, leaving marks on the piece.

In some places, the nails were also coming out, which caused the screen to start moving out of place. On the other hand, there were water infiltrations that caused the paint to run off and ruined the work.

The wooden structure that supports the cloths itself has problems, not least from beetle infestation and other pests, but also from unevenness.

With this intervention, shared by three entities – Fábrica da Igreja de S. Pedro, Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and Millenium BCP Foundation – «it was possible to promote the safeguard, restoration and conservation of this heritage property, which is now available for use again of the community».

With the technical participation of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, the cost of the intervention rose to around 23 thousand euros, with a contribution from the Millennium BCP Foundation. The conservation and restoration work was carried out by Junqueira 220, a renowned company in the conservation and restoration sector.

This piece, «by an unknown author, but dating from the second half of the 1577th century», according to Alexandra Gonçalves, Regional Director of Culture of the Algarve, was commissioned by the Order of Santiago, which built the church in XNUMX, where there was already a church. chapel, erected by the fishermen of Bairro da Ribeira.
