The winter solstice takes place at 16:28 pm tomorrow, Thursday, December 21, in the Northern Hemisphere, and with it begins the coldest season.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the first day of winter will be sunny and cold. The rain, which is sorely lacking, may appear but only on Christmas Day and especially in the North of the country.

Thus, according to IPMA, tomorrow the day will be sunny throughout mainland Portugal, with Guarda and Bragança being the coldest cities, with a 1ºC minimum, while the maximum will reach only 9ºC in the first city and 14ºC in the second. In Faro, temperatures will fluctuate between a minimum of 7ºC and a maximum of 18ºC.

The first day of winter is also the day when the sun passes lower in the sky at solar noon throughout the year. It is also one of the shortest days of the year, with the Sun being above the horizon just nine hours and eight minutes in Bragança, 9:13 in Porto, 9:19 in Lisbon, 9:34 in Ponta Delgada, 9:38 in Faro and 10:00 am in Funchal. In other words, there will be a night much longer than the day.

The good news is that, from this date onwards, the days get longer and longer, until the next solstice, on June 21, 2018.
