64% of hoteliers in the Algarve believe that 2018 will be better in terms of occupancy rate, according to a national survey carried out by the Hotel Association of Portugal (AHP) among its members.

Also according to this study, 32% of hoteliers in the Algarve consider that the occupancy rate will be the same and 4% that it will be worse.

With regard to total revenue and accommodation, 82% think that 2018 will be better and 18% that it will be the same. The most optimistic are hoteliers in the North and Lisbon.

Asked about the average price per occupied room and the RevPar (average price per available room), all hoteliers surveyed expected a better performance, with those in the North and Lisbon being the most optimistic, followed by those in Madeira.

Occupancy rate - forecasts for 2018

As for hoteliers in the Algarve, 79% think that 2018 will be better and 21% that it will be the same.

Overall, according to this survey, the national hotel industry predicts that next year will have a better performance in all indicators, except for the average stay.

89% of respondents expect better total and accommodation revenue, 86% better average price per room sold (ARR) and 85% better RevPar.

United States, China and Brazil are pointed out as growth markets in 2018 in the hotel industry. According to the AHP survey, the best months will continue to be August, September and July and the worst will be January, February and December.

In the North, Centre, Alentejo and Azores, hoteliers point out as the main market for their hotel unit… Portugal.

The French market is the first market in Lisbon. In the Algarve and Madeira it is the United Kingdom. Spain remains the second market in the North, Center and Alentejo, being absent from the top 3 in Algarve, Madeira and Azores.

When asked about the opportunities of the issuing markets, the majority of responses fell on the United States (26%), China (22%) and Brazil (21%). Hoteliers are also optimistic about new air routes, with a focus on flights to the North Atlantic, the United States and China.

Already asked about the main constraints to the sustainability of the business, 30% responded that they fall on the costs of water, gas, electricity and 18% on the dependence on operators online.

This survey was carried out between the 23rd of November and the 7th of December with AHP's associated tourist developments. Of the responses obtained, 78% belong to Hotels, 7% to Apartment Hotels, 8% to Inns, 2% to Tourist Villages and 5% to others.
