The implementation of independent life support models for adults with disabilities is one of the topics that will be discussed in the “International Congress of Persons with Disabilities – Ensuring Rights, Overcoming Barriers", promoted by APPC FARO, on the occasion of its 35th anniversary, on the 24th and 25th of November, at the University of Algarve.

At the same time as the application of the Support Model for Independent Living (MAVI) in Portugal, Jos van Loon will be in Faro, on Saturday, the 25th, for an unprecedented presentation, in which he will talk about the experience of Arduin, where adults with disabilities live integrated in the community.

The conference “From quality of care to quality of life. The deinstitutionalization and current practice of Arduin” is scheduled for the second day of the congress, Saturday, from 9:30 am

The university professor argues that models of community organization, with personal assistants who provide support in daily activities, increase the quality of life of adults with disabilities, compared to the classic models of institutionalization.

The quality of life of children and young people with Cerebral Palsy will also be another of the topics in focus at the congress, with emphasis on the conference by Miguel Ángel Verdugo, from the University of Salamanca, who will focus on this topic, on Friday, the 24th. , from 10:30 am.

A Portuguese Association of Cerebral Palsy of Faro (APC Faro) was founded in November 1982, by a group of parents and technicians, to respond to the high number of children with Cerebral Palsy in the district, at the time without specialized intervention in this area.

With a team of 82 professionals, APPC Faro it currently provides support to 564 users in the Algarve region, in a total of its eight areas.

The most recent ones started operating in 2013, with the inauguration of a Residential Home and an Autonomous Residence, with capacity for 25 people.
