The application, financed by the FEDER, for the requalification of Largo Manuel Gomes, from Tribute to Paco de Lucía, in Monte Francisco (Castro Marim), was approved.

Framed in the Action Plan for the Development of Endogenous Resources (PADRE) and approved under the Algarve 2020, the work is financed at 70%, with an estimated total investment of 325 thousand euros.

The idea is to pay tribute to the «eternal genius of the guitar and the memory of his mother Luzia Gomes, a native of this town in Castro Marim», says the Chamber of Castro Marim.

The requalification also includes the already completed improvement of the surrounding streets (eastern zone). At the same time, there was also the paving of the streets in the western part of the town, a project valued at around 100 euros.

Largo Manuel Gomes – Tribute to Paco de Lucía «was born from the desire to expand and promote the bond of the absolute master of flamenco to Castro Marim, more specifically to Monte Francisco, where his mother lived, whose joy and Portuguese countenance always made him proud and inspired», says the municipality of Castromarinense.

Her connection to her maternal roots is perpetuated in the artistic name of Francisco Gustavo Sánchez Gomes – Paco de Lucía – and in the albums “Castro Marín” (1981) and “Luzia” (1998).

Largo Paco de Lucía will be a memorial to the guitarist, who evokes and rescues a little of the life and work of the musician, composer and performer.

«The creation of a gardened pedestrian space is planned, combined with artistic pieces by the painter Carlos Luz and the sculptor Carlos Oliveira, who sensorially invoke the artist Paco de Lucía, with an allusion to his chosen instrument: the guitar».

An audio system will also be installed at the site, to provide visitors with the musical legacy of the genius of guitar and flamenco.

The Chamber of Castro Marim has also organized the Festival de Lucía, patronized by the fado singer Mariza, which will have its 2018rd edition in August 3 (supported by Algarve 2020, with a co-financing rate of 60% by the FEDER).

The twinning with the municipality of Algeciras, in Andalusia, where Paco de Lucía was born, is also in progress.
