The swearing-in ceremony of Infantry Colonel Paulo Jorge Varela Curro, as commander of the 1st Infantry Regiment, in Beja, took place yesterday, the 21st.

The ceremony began at 10:00 am, with the reception of the new Commander of the Regiment at the entrance to the barracks, where the Police Guard of the Unit paid him the statutory honors.

Received at the Porta de Armas by the 2nd Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Luís Barroso, and Major General Ventura Lopes led the commander to the parade, where the Unit was formed at its maximum strength, including the Tavira Detachment.

After the parade of forces had paid the statutory honors, the Head of the Command Secretariat, Sergeant Major Fernando Franco, read the nomination order, “By Choice”, for the functions of RI1 Commander and, by the 2nd Commander, the Unit's Heraldic Standard was delivered.

This was followed by an allocution made by the commander and then a search of the parade forces.

After the parade of the forces parading before the new commander, there followed the presentation of greetings in the Library by all the officers, sergeants, enlisted representatives and civil servants of the Unit.

 

Curriculum of Colonel Paulo Jorge Varela Curro

Infantry Colonel Varela Curro was born in January 1965, having entered the Military Academy in 1984.
In September 1989, he finished the Military Academy Course, having been placed as a Lieutenant at the Practical School of Infantry, in Mafra.

Promoted to Lieutenant in 1990, he moved to his preferred Military Garrison, Beja, being placed in Infantry Regiment no. Operational charge, deputy to the Commander of a Sniper Company, Commander of the Instruction Company, Commander of the Command and Services Company and, later, officer of the General Staff of the Unit.

As Major, he worked in the Directorate of Administration and Personnel Mobilization, in Lisbon, as Head of the Staff Management Section of the Permanent Staff.

He attended the General Staff Course, at the Institute of Higher Military Studies (IAEM), in the academic years 2001-2003, having, after its conclusion, been appointed “by choice” to exercise teaching functions at that Institute, in the Teaching Section Administration, in the scope of Human Resources in Time of Peace and in Campaign.

Promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in June 2005, he became responsible for matters relating to Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) and Legislative Framework for National Defense and the Armed Forces, for the various courses of the IESM, accumulating with the matters of the antecedent.

On that date, he also became a collaborator in the subjects of Command and Leadership, Conflict Management and Negotiation, and also Psychological Operations in the various courses of that Military Higher Education Institute.

For six years, he was director of the Civil-Military Cooperation Courses (CIMIC) that were held annually at that Institute from 2006 to 2010.

In 2008, he attended the Brazilian Army's Command and General Staff School, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the Brazilian Army's Command and General Staff Course, having obtained the classification of “Distinguished”.

In the 2009 and 2010 academic years, he participated as a teacher in an exchange project with the Spanish Armed Forces School, in Madrid, having collaborated in modules of the Joint General Staff Course, in the area of ​​Command and Leadership.

From September 2010 to September 2012, he served as 2nd Commander of the 1st Garrison Regiment, in Angra do Heroísmo, Azores.

From September 2012 to September 2015, he worked at EMGFA.

He was Chief of Staff of the Immediate Reaction Force (CEMFRI) in 2015, having participated in the planning and execution of the Lusitano 2014 and Felino 2015 exercises, as well as in several activations of that General Staff.

From October 2015 to August 2016, he worked in the Land Forces Command (CFT) as Head of the G5-Planos Division, having, among other functions, planned and participated in Exercise Orion 2016.

He was promoted to Colonel in February 2016, having been transferred to EMGFA, taking up the functions of Head of the Force Planning Division of the Military Strategic Planning Division (RPF/DIPLAEM) of EMGFA.

By order of last October 9th, from the Chief of Staff of the Army, he was appointed “by choice” to perform the functions of Commander of the 1st Infantry Regiment in Beja.

It has several military and civil courses, of which the following stand out:

He also has a postgraduate degree in Leadership and People Management, by INA – National Institute of Administration.

On his service sheet, there are 12 commendations, of which one awarded by the Minister of National Defence, one by General CEMGFA, seven by General Officers and three by Colonels Commanding the Regiment. It also has several praiseworthy references and sporting awards.

It has several awards, including two Distinguished Service Silver Medals, the 2nd and 3rd class Military Merit Medal, the Gold and Silver Medals for Exemplary Behavior and the Brazilian Army Merit Medal.
