Researcher Carlos Fiolhais, professor Isabel P. Martins and journalists Filomena Naves and Teresa Firmino are the winners of the Ciência Viva Montepio 2017 Awards.

The Ciência Viva Montepio Grand Prize distinguishes Carlos Fiolhais for his notable action in promoting scientific culture as a teacher, researcher, author and editor of Gradiva's prestigious “Open Science” collection.

Doctorate in Theoretical Physics, Carlos Fiolhais is a full professor at the University of Coimbra and director of the Rómulo Centro Ciência Viva.

«The name of Carlos Fiolhais is a choice that has long prevailed in the Ciência Viva Montepio Grand Prix. This scientist's multifaceted curriculum has always been marked by civic participation, sharing his vast knowledge with society through his regular presence in schools and public conferences, the publication of opinion articles in the media and large circulation books. A look at his path reveals an inexhaustible curiosity that took him from computer networks and condensed matter physics to the history of science, but also to speleology and science fiction», highlights the project Ciência na Imprensa Regional.

Carlos Fiolhais has always had a special appreciation for books, an instrument of choice for the dissemination of knowledge. This led him to direct the oldest university library, without, however, disdaining radio, television and blogging, such as the prestigious Rerum Natura.

He was also responsible for the creation of the first public library entirely dedicated to scientific dissemination for all ages, today Centro Ciência Viva Rómulo de Carvalho, integrated into the national network.

With a remarkable career in research and teaching of Physics, Carlos Fiolhais combines the dissemination of scientific culture and an active and unfathomable civic participation.

The Ciência Viva Montepio Education Award distinguishes professor Isabel P. Martins for her research and teaching work and for her fundamental intervention in science education in our country.

PhD in Educational Sciences/Science Didactics from the University of Aveiro, she mainly investigated science teaching in the early years and modern teacher training, developing working formats with young students, teaching resources and training environments.

The Ciência Viva Montepio Media Award distinguishes the journalists Filomena Naves (Diário de Notícias) and Teresa Firmino (Jornal Público) for the regular coverage that, throughout their professional career, they have done, with great rigor and clarity, on current scientific topics in the media and in large circulation books.

The awards ceremony will take place on 24 November, National Day of Scientific Culture, at 16 pm, at the Biodiversity Gallery – Centro Ciência Viva, located at Casa Andresen, in Porto. The Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, will be present.

This event, which marks the Science and Technology Week, will be preceded, at 14:30 pm, by the public debate “Science and pseudoscience in Health Communication”.

The Ciência Viva Montepio Awards are awarded annually by Ciência Viva and Montepio and distinguish personalities and institutions that have stood out for their exceptional merit in promoting scientific culture in Portugal. The winners were selected by representatives of the scientific research institutions that make up the Ciência Viva Agency (see list below).

Over the past five years, the Ciência Viva Montepio Grand Prix has distinguished editor Guilherme Valente, from Gradiva, geologist Galopim de Carvalho, botanist Jorge Paiva, physicist Manuel Paiva and pathologist Sobrinho Simões.
