The Baby Week in Olhão, with the motto “Side by Side with my papa”, takes place from 9 to 14 October and aims to “raise the population's awareness of the importance of fathers in the care and promotion of children's development”.

Thus, «shared parenting, caring parenthood and gender equality will be some of the themes to be addressed in the various activities aimed at babies, children and families», explains the Regional Health Administration (ARS) of the Algarve.

In this year's edition, the week counts with the presence of the godfather, Custódio Moreno, professor and current regional director of the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth.

During the event, a series of activities will be promoted in the community, from the 9th to the 12th of October, activities at the Algarve Outlet, on the 13th and 14th of October, shop windows competition promoted by ACRAL Olhão, exhibitions of school works, merit and excellence award awarded to personality or entity distinguished for its active role in promoting care in childhood and Bebé Estrela – title to the first baby born in the municipality of Olhão during the week.

On the 12th of October, in the Auditorium of the Municipal Library of Olhão, there is a technical workshop «Caring Paternity», promoted by Vasco Prazeres, a doctor at the General Directorate of Health and advisor for Equality at the Ministry of Health.

This prevention project, carried out in Olhão since 2009, seeks to involve the entire community, «in an alert for quality care in the first years of life that promotes child mental health, similarly to the pioneer project of the Baby Week in Canela, created by child psychiatrist Salvador Celia and spread over several Brazilian cities», says the ARS.

The event is organized by the Algarve Regional Health Administration, IP, through the Child Mental Health Support Group of the Olhão Health Center (Care Unit in the Olhar+ Community) of the Central Health Centers Group, and by the Municipality of Olhão, through the Social Network, once again with the support of ACRAL Olhão, AlgarveOutlet and from many partners in the Municipality.
