The «protection of the natural spaces of the Lower Guadiana» is one of the objectives of the “Valagua” project, which brings together Portuguese and Spanish entities, and is presented this Wednesday, October 18, at 11:00 am, at Casa do Sal, in Castro Marim . 

Also with the objective of bringing the two countries together «around a joint strategy for valuing the Lower Guadiana», the “Valagua” – Project for the Environmental Enhancement and Integrated Management of Water and Habitats in the Lower Guadiana Transfrontier will last until September 2019 .

The work methodologies to be developed within the scope of the project aim to contribute to the protection and sustainable management of the natural spaces of the Lower Guadiana and, in particular, of the riverine systems characteristic of this territory, focusing, above all, on the development and sharing of management instruments integration of water and biodiversity, in the ecotourism valorization of natural resources and in the involvement of social, political and technical actors with intervention in the theme.

The project is co-financed by the Interreg Spain-Portugal Cooperation Program (POCTEP) 2014-2020, and involves governmental and non-governmental entities from both countries, namely the Association for the Defense of Heritage of Mértola (ADPM) as the main beneficiary, the Diputación Provincial of Huelva, the Medio Ambiente y Ordenación del Territorio of the Junta de Andalucía, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadiana, the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, the Portuguese Environment Agency and the Association for the Development of Lower Guadiana, as well such as the universities of Huelva and the Algarve.

The public presentation session of the project will be attended by experts and representatives of public and private entities, Portuguese and Spanish, who will present some communications related to the project's themes, namely, to frame the activities to be developed under this partnership.
