The minister of Internal Administration, Constança Urbano de Sousa, submitted the resignation, which was accepted by the prime minister, announced today the office of António Costa.

The news of the minister's resignation reached the newsrooms minutes ago, through a note from the prime minister's office.

The resignation of Constança Urbano de Sousa comes after the communication to the country, made last night by the President of the Republic.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that there has to be "a new cycle that will inevitably oblige the Government to consider what, who, how and when this cycle is used", from the Salon of the Town Hall of Oliveira do Hospital, minister the need for a ministerial reshuffle.

“The Minister of Internal Administration formally presented me with the resignation in terms that I cannot refuse”, says the prime minister in the note sent to the newsrooms.

In the statement, António Costa publicly thanks "the dedication and commitment with which [the minister] served the country in the performance of her duties."

According to Antena1, Minister Constança Urbano de Sousa, in her letter, reveals that already at the time of the tragedy in Pedrógão Grande, she had already asked for her resignation, having been the prime minister to insist with her to stay, in order to find solutions to the problems of Forest.

"Right after the tragedy in Pedrógão I insistently asked him to release me from my duties and gave him time to find someone to replace me, which is why I did not formally and publicly ask for my resignation", writes Constança Urbano de Sousa in your letter.

The minister says that she did so "out of loyalty" and that the prime minister, at the time, asked her to remain in office.

"He asked me to stay in office, always with the argument that we cannot take the easy way out, but face adversity, as well as to prepare the reform of the forest fire prevention and combat model, as proposed by the Independent Technical Commission», advances the minister's letter.

“His confidence was always expressed, which I naturally recognize and reveals the greatness of character that I have always recognized in him”, adds Constança Urbano de Sousa.

During this weekend's tragedy, the minister again requested that, shortly after his critical period, António Costa accept the cessation of functions, adding: «despite this tragedy being the result of multiple factors, I considered that I had no political conditions. and personal to continue in the exercise of this position, even though I had your trust».

«Having ended the critical period of this tragedy and having already prepared the proposals for measures to be discussed at the Extraordinary Council of Ministers on 21 October, I consider that all the conditions to keep me in office are exhausted, so I now formally present the my resignation, which you have to accept, even to preserve my personal dignity”, concludes the letter signed by Constança Urbano de Sousa.
