The means of transport we use when traveling, what we eat and even the tree tourism are challenges to current societies. Discussing and trying to find answers to these themes are the main objectives of the INCREASE international congress, to be held from 11 to 13 October, at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia (ISE) in Campus da Penha of the University of Algarve (UAlg), in Faro.

Manuela Moreira da Silva is part of the coordinating committee of the event and explained to Sul Informação that, "nowadays, when society is facing a challenge, it needs people from different areas of engineering".

For example, when talking about sustainable mobility and challenges to tourism, “carrying tourists in vehicles with only two people” is not the most appropriate, and therefore there are challenges to be overcome.

As well as mechanical engineering is “important to develop food preservation equipment, namely recyclable packaging”, explains the professor.

The list does not end here. Food engineering has a role to play in product quality and in the biochemical and microbiological changes that affect food.

"The lectures will address the major fields of engineering, such as reducing the carbon footprint in civil construction", he stresses.

This congress, which the organization intends to make it biennial, will also address issues such as renewable energies, climate change, water and society. Basically, «everything that has to do with quality of life and sustainability goes through the domains of engineering», says Manuela Moreira da Silva.

In addition to wanting to explore these themes, INCREASE (INternational CongRess on Engineering and Sustainability in the XXI cEntury) wants to contribute to the «scientific promotion of the ISE» and create «partnership networks, both in the area of research and in technological innovation ».

Proof of this is that there are between «120 to 150 participants» confirmed, many of them speakers from countries like the United States of America, Italy, Spain, Romania and Morocco, but also some from the UAlg Institute of Engineering Superior.

Some of the scientific papers to be presented will be published in the publisher Springer, dedicated to science and technology.

As for the choice of Faro to host this international congress, Manuela Moreira da Silva stresses that it is “a strategic place for this type of event, as it is a Mediterranean city that faces climate change, with all the severity we are witnessing”.

This means that there are «challenges for society, which are very important in the field of engineering, such as rainfall peaks, which lead to urban floods, fires and sustainable tourism», he concludes.
