The freshmen of the Marine Biology and Biology courses at the University of Algarve (UAlg) spent the afternoon of Tuesday, September 19, cleaning the Ria Formosa, in the Ludo area near the beach of Faro, in an environmental practice.

The action was organized by Straw Patrol, in collaboration with the 3rd year students of these courses, responsible for welcoming the newly arrived students.

For about an hour, taking advantage of the low tide, the approximately 40 students covered 350 meters, collecting different types of garbage. Much of the garbage collected was associated with fishing activity, and “several ropes and several salt containers (used to catch razor clams) were collected,” explains the organization.

“Several water bottles and caps” were also collected, as well as “straws, running shoes, many cigarette butts and wood”.

In total, the students "were able to prevent 114 kilos of waste from entering the oceans and endangering the lives of marine organisms and human health and safety."

According to the organization, «at a time when academic practice is widely discussed, these students showed that it is possible to combine the usual activity with the protection of marine ecosystems».
