Researchers from the universities of the Algarve and Marburg (Germany) will spend the month at the Lusitanian-Roman station at Boca do Rio, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, to carry out a new archaeological campaign and continue the actions carried out at the beginning of the year in this archaeosite.

The work will be directed by João Pedro Bernardes, from the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Algarve, who is driving the campaign, which will have the help of a team of researchers from the University of Marburg, coordinated by archaeologist Felix Teichner.

«In March, a multidisciplinary international team, composed of archaeologists and geologists, carried out research in the Roman archeological site of Boca do Rio. For two weeks, non-invasive surveys were carried out using a crossing of different methods of geophysical prospecting, thus allowing for insights. evidence of structures and other “anomalies” of human origin hidden underground in the area,” according to the Vila do Bispo Council, which supports the campaign.

At that time, the work was coordinated by Professor Dr Felix Teichner, from the University of Marburg, and had the contribution of researchers based in other German universities – Cologne and Aix-la-Chapelle.

“The campaign that is now starting and that will be developed throughout the month of September intends to confirm, through archaeological surveys, the geophysical “anomalies” registered in March”, added the municipality.

The researchers hope to find "news concerning the dimension and spatial and functional organization of that important Roman establishment which, since the XNUMXth century, has been revealing a continuous human presence between the middle of the XNUMXst century and the XNUMXth century AD".

The team that will work on the campaign will be installed at the NIA-VB – Nucleus for Archaeological Research of Vila do Bispo, a new municipal facility that works on the premises of the former Kindergarten in Budens.

«In 2017, the “occupancy rate” of the NIA-VB has already exceeded initial expectations, demonstrating that it is an excellent research attraction, a distinctive municipal offer that translates into scientific return, in knowledge about the municipality's territory , but also in the sociocultural animation of places like Budens and Vale de Boi – a different concept of “Scientific Tourism”», concluded the Vila do Bispo Chamber.
